Donald J. McKay, member of McNees’ Intellectual Property Law Group, has experience protecting methods, systems, programs, business methods, and devices of a mechanical, chemical, electrical, biotechnological, and computer/business method nature. He has prosecuted a wide range of patents, including applications, for over 20 years as a member of the Patent Bar. And for over 15 years as a member of the Pennsylvania Bar, Don has prosecuted hundreds of trademark applications and worked with clients on a multitude of various commercial and business matters.

Don manages the patent and trademark portfolios of entities identified by the Pittsburgh Business Times as some of Western Pennsylvania’s fastest growing companies. He also helps businesses and corporations avoid regulatory and compliance issues, litigation, and other problems that can lead to expensive settlements, verdicts, and attorney’s fees.

  • Serving in-house corporate needs ranging from entity formation to dispute resolution;
  • Preparing and negotiating a wide range of professional service agreements, shareholder agreements, employment agreements, software licenses, and other commercial contracts;
  • Litigating intellectual property, trade secret, contract, and other Federal court matters;
  • Procuring patents and trademarks; and
  • Conducting infringement investigations, analyses, and opinions.

Prior to joining McNees, Don founded a boutique business and intellectual property firm based in Pittsburgh that delivered individualized and practical legal solutions for patent, trademark, contract, and other business matters.

How does Donald spend his free time?

Don is a volunteer coach and local sports association general counsel board member in his community, and enjoys spending time with his wife and two children.
